Enough of the story
I have said much about ‘story’ in this chapter and perhaps I need to clarify something: Initially it is important for people to be able to tell their story, simply because they need to know that they’re being heard. There’s a trust that develops because of that.
But after telling your story once or twice, it no longer serves a purpose. The Blackfoot Indians of Alberta have a wonderful healing circle tradition. Anyone in the circle is allowed to tell their story twice. If they start a third time, everybody turns their chairs around. In other words: “Enough already!” They just don’t want to hear it anymore. Why not? Because in the story, there is no way out. Because in the story, I get to be right.
Here is the Choose Again variation on the Serenity Prayer, which may speak to you now after reading the above:
“God grant me the serenity to accept the people I cannot change, the courage to change the one I can, and the wisdom to know that it’s ME.”
